Comrade Lucky Emonefe Olaladroja, a factional president of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), has come to the defense of Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, amid allegations of interference in student union leadership and the alleged brutalization of a rival NANS factional president, Isa Atiku Abuakar.

Speaking during an interview on Sunrise Daily on Channels TV, Olaladroja dismissed the accusations as politically motivated and baseless. He praised Seyi Tinubu for “bringing himself low to mingle with youths,” and described the allegations as part of a smear campaign against the President’s son.

The controversy erupted after Henry Oku, who identified himself as a former NANS Senate President, accused Seyi Tinubu of instructing management at the Wells Carlton Hotel in Abuja to obstruct an inauguration event scheduled for April 29, 2025, intended to install Isa Atiku Abuakar as NANS president. Oku claimed the hotel’s power supply was cut and facilities withdrawn under Seyi’s influence, triggering chaos allegedly involving gunmen and machete-wielding men during the program. Former Kano State Governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, who was reportedly delivering a speech at the event, was caught up in the disruption.

Oku also alleged that Seyi Tinubu was physically present at the hotel and directly ordered the shutdown. Photos later surfaced online showing Abuakar hospitalized, with cotton wool visibly wrapped around his hand.

But Olaladroja, who was sworn in as NANS president the following day—April 30, 2025—at the NAF Conference Centre in Abuja, denied the claims and questioned their credibility. “Seyi is the only president’s son that lowers himself to engage with the youth,” he said. “We’ve had several presidents, but most Nigerians don’t even know their children’s names.”

He accused Sahara Reporters of fabricating the allegations, claiming the outlet has a vendetta against the Tinubu administration. “I read one stupid allegation on Sahara Reporters. I don’t know if they have an issue with the president,” he stated.

Olaladroja also said he met Abuakar in Mabushi, Abuja, later on the evening of the incident, where Abuakar allegedly apologized for impersonating him as NANS president. He denied witnessing any signs of injury or brutality.

The NANS leadership dispute intensified after dueling inaugurations and conflicting claims of legitimacy. Olaladroja maintains that he emerged from a credible election held on February 27, 2025, at the Old Parade Ground in Abuja, overseen by the Department of State Services (DSS), the police, and Ministry of Education officials. “There is no faction in NANS,” he insisted. “I don’t even know him [Abuakar] in NANS. He was not one of the 15 aspirants in the election.”

He also referenced a previous reconciliation attempt in April 2025, during which he said Abuakar agreed to withdraw his claim to the presidency but later reneged. He further alleged that Abuakar emerged from a “kangaroo election” in Abia State, which he described as illegitimate.

Addressing the reported violence at the Wells Carlton Hotel, Olaladroja said he was at the Ministry of Education at the time, discussing delays in federal scholarship disbursement. He added that the DSS later informed him of Abuakar’s location in Mabushi, where he saw him but “with no visible injuries.”

“I don’t know anything about him being abducted or brutalized,” Olaladroja said, noting that he intends to follow up with the relevant security agencies to investigate the matter.
