The Young Lawyers Forum (“YLF”) of the Nigerian Bar Association (“NBA”) is set to host the maiden edition of the NBA-YLF Arbitration Challenge (“Arbitration Challenge”) for young lawyers in Nigeria.

The Arbitration Challenge, which is the first of its kind in Nigeria, is aimed at stimulating the practice of international commercial dispute resolution mechanisms among young lawyers, with a focus on the roles of legal practitioners in foreign investments in Nigeria. The goal is to deepen the interest and skill set of young lawyers in arbitration as a mechanism for investment and commercial dispute resolution.

Furthermore, the Arbitration Challenge provides an opportunity for young lawyers to learn, and apply key principles in international commercial arbitration, interpret the various texts of international commercial law found in various foreign investment agreements, and consequently, hone written and oral advocacy skills.

In the course of participating in the Arbitration Challenge, participants will be tested on the application of their written and oral advocacy skills to a dispute scenario adjudged by leading arbitration experts.

The Arbitration Challenge is open to all branches of the NBA to present and register a team of not more than five (5) young lawyers (of 1-7 years post-qualification experience). Such teams should preferably be coordinated by the YLF branch within each NBA branch where a YLF branch exists. In the absence of a YLF branch, the NBA branch Chairman may appoint young lawyers within the branch to constitute a team to represent such NBA branch.

It is expected that all branches registered for the Arbitration Challenge will in the first instance participate in the preliminary rounds based on written submissions.

Successful entries shall be chosen by leading arbitration practitioners to participate in the next phase of the challenge which shall be the virtual regional rounds.

Four (4) teams shall emerge from the virtual regional rounds and proceed to the final oral rounds which is proposed to be a physical hearing to be judged by leading arbitration experts, scheduled to hold in April 2021 in Lagos.

Registration for the Arbitration Challenge shall be open from the 5th of August 2020 till the 15th of September 2020. The dispute scenario as well as the rules of the Arbitration Challenge will be published once the registration window closes. All branches of the NBA may register their teams via the link below: https://bit.ly/nbaylfarbitration

To ensure the success of the Arbitration Challenge, the NBA – YLF Steering Committee on Arbitration (the “Committee”) led by Adetola Adebesin will be available to liaise with the participating teams and other stakeholders. Other members of the Committee are Randolph Fiberesima, Temiloluwa Dosumu, Abisola Akinyemi, Jonathan Ezeumeh, Lolade Tijani, Patricia Udeh and Pentho Whesu.
