Operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service, Ogun Area 1 Command, Idiroko, have intercepted four live pangolins from suspected smugglers along the Yemoamota–Abule-Igboorand Ebute-Igboora axis.

The animals, which were kept in wire mesh cages and concealed in a sack, were reportedly intercepted at about 3 am on Thursday when Customs operatives, acting on intelligence, flagged down a motorcycle along the Yemoamota–Igboora route.

Chado Zakari, Deputy Superintendent of Customs and Public Relations Officer of the command, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists on Friday.

Zakari said that “Upon inspection, officers discovered four pangolins confined in wire mesh cages and concealed within a sack.

“The sophisticated nature of the packaging suggests the involvement of an organised smuggling syndicate.

“To evade arrest, the suspects abandoned their motorcycle and the endangered species, vanishing into the thick terrain as the evening fog rolled in”.

He explained that, after the seizure, the command prioritised the animals’ welfare and officially transferred the pangolins to the Wildlife Conservation Centre on Friday.

Zakari said the handover was conducted by Assistant Comptroller Tajjudeen Bello (Ag. DC Admin) on behalf of the Acting Customs Area Controller, Oladapo Afeni.

According to the statement, the seizure underscores the command’s commitment to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.

The operatives were commended for displaying courage and professionalism during the operation.

Afeni reiterated that the command remains vigilant against trans-border crimes and is committed to collaborating with relevant partners to curb the illegal trade in endangered species.

He also issued a warning to smugglers and traffickers of endangered wildlife, urging them to desist and stressing that the command remains “battle-ready” to enforce the law.
