*Rejects Claim Of Only Six Human Rights Activities, Lists Over 34 Documented Cases

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Ikorodu Branch has responded to the NBA Human Rights Institute (HRI) Monitoring Committee, describing the committee’s publication on the branch’s human rights activities as “factually inaccurate, misleading and reflective of a deficient review process.”

In a statement dated December 31, 2025, signed by the Branch Chairman, Olawunmi Adeola, and addressed to the First Vice President of the NBA, Mr. Sebastian Anyia, the branch rejected the committee’s claim that it carried out only six human rights activities between January and October 2025.

The branch clarified that its concern was never about “winning” or losing any competition but the “gross misrepresentation” of its documented human rights activities.

“The issue raised, clearly and consistently, was the gross misrepresentation of the Branch’s documented human rights activities as being only six (6) within the stated period, a conclusion that is demonstrably incorrect and hence, demoralizing to the collective efforts of members who volunteered time, resources and professional expertise in service to humanity,” the statement read.

The Ikorodu Branch accused the committee of narrowing the criteria for evaluation after submissions had been made.

“The initial conditions issued to Branches did not restrict qualifying activities solely to court decongestion, charge numbers, or inmate releases. On the contrary, they expressly recognized other human rights interventions, including seminars, sensitization and enlightenment programmes, advocacy initiatives, prison and police station visits and community outreaches,” the branch stated.

“Any attempt, after the fact, to narrow the criteria exclusively to court processes or charge numbers amounts to a post hoc reinterpretation unsupported by the text of the notice earlier issued to Branches.”

Contrary to the committee’s claim that the branch failed to provide charge numbers, suit numbers, parties, and dates, the Ikorodu Branch listed numerous activities with specific details from its submission, including:

Court decongestion activities at various courts including Court 4 Igbogbo (January 30, February 17, March 20, 2025), Court 5 Ijede (March 27, 2025), and Agbowa Magistrate Court (April 3, May 8, July 3, 2025).

Police Duty Solicitors Scheme activities at Area ‘N’ Command (August 15, 2025), Imota Police Division (August 21, 2025), and Agbowa Police Division (August 21, 2025).

Anti-cultism sensitization programmes at United High Schools (July 9, 2025), Homat Group of Schools, Agric (September 18, 2025), and Homat Unique Pivotal Secondary School (October 15, 2025).

Domestic violence campaigns, child rights training, anti-human trafficking awareness, and legal aid sittings throughout the period.

“A simple audit reveals not less than thirty-four (34) distinct charge numbers and/or parties, across multiple courts and with dates, which is still in excess of the figures attributed to the Branch by the Committee even if groupings were by dates,” the statement noted.

The branch stated that verification is the core duty of the committee and cannot be discharged perfunctorily.

“The publication provides no scoring breakdown, no referenced omissions, no analysis nor explanation of how the figure of six (6) activities was reached. In the absence of transparency, the assertion remains unproven and indefensible,” the branch added.

NBA Ikorodu _ HR Monitoring Committee Response

The Ikorodu Branch clarified that its response was not an attack on the committee nor an attempt to discredit other branches.

“It is a principled objection to the careless misrepresentation of documented efforts and the public diminution of the work of volunteers who have consistently served our communities under the banner of the NBA Ikorodu Branch,” the statement read.

The branch concluded: “The NBA Ikorodu Branch remains committed to human rights advocacy, justice reform and service to humanity, regardless of mischaracterizations of its efforts. We have never been defined by awards nor recognitions.”

The NBA HRI Monitoring Committee had earlier published a response on December 29, 2025, titled “Putting The Record Straight,” in which it defended its evaluation process.

The committee, in a statement signed by Adam Tanko Jubreel, had claimed that the Ikorodu Branch submitted its report “in form of a brochure with different pictures” rather than complying with the required format.

The committee stated that unlike other branches that provided details such as charge numbers, suit numbers, parties involved, dates, and copies of judgments and rulings, the Ikorodu Branch “failed to do so.”

“We as a Committee strictly complied with the instructions as contained in our Notice. Many branches who submitted their reports late were not considered,” the committee had said, adding that branches that “just stated the activities they participated in without giving further particulars was deemed to have failed to prove themselves and lost points.”
