Lagos Lawyer, Mr. Joshua Nwachukwu has cautioned lawyers against maligning the integrity of the forthcoming Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) National Elections.

He disclosed that it does not augur well for the integrity of the Legal Profession when Lawyers continue to cast aspersions on the electoral process, out of anxiety of losing.
“Many don’t see the danger of questioning or maligning the integrity of the electoral process of the forthcoming elections, except they feel their candidate will lose, because even if your candidate wins, what’s the guarantee that he isn’t a product of the alleged rigged system.” He said.
Besides, he noted that they are capable of eroding the integrity of the entire process.
“This accusation is eroding trust in the probity of the electoral process and is definitely going to delegitimize the results.”
Furthermore, he noted that it is wrong to continue to chant the “mantra” of an alleged rigged process on the basis that one did not win the election.
“Surely, it can’t be that after questioning the electoral process and you win, you clinch victory but if you lose you continue the “rigged election” mantra.”
He said that such conduct is a product of double standard and bereft of dignified sportsmanship.
“This double standard and cherry-picking isn’t acceptable and it’s beneath the threshold of dignified campaign and sportsmanship.” He said.
Also, he noted that the narrative is a dangerous approach and targeted at later garbing an elected President with the toga of illegitimacy.
“This scare tactics which clearly is a double-edged-sword is extremely dangerous and it ultimately pushes the narrative of an illegitimate president.”
Finally, he stated that if these aspersions continue, it mean the Legal Profession would lack the moral probity to sanitize on electoral reforms in Nigeria.
“More importantly, the “loose talk” of irregularities in the NBA election is a scandal and it robs the NBA of having the locus standi to educate the Nigerian public and Government on electoral integrity and reforms.” He concluded.
