The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has approved a significant increase in the admission quota for the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme at the University of Abuja, raising the number of students admitted annually from 75 to 200.

The announcement was made by Professor Fatima Kyari, registrar of the MDCN, following a re-accreditation exercise conducted by a 17-member team from the council at the university.

This development aligns with a federal government directive issued in January 2024, which instructed all accredited medical and nursing schools in Nigeria to double their student intake in an effort to address the ongoing brain drain in the health sector.

The directive was formally communicated through a letter from the MDCN, mandating medical schools to increase their enrolment by 100 percent starting this year.

In a press statement released yesterday, Dr. Habib Yakoob, acting director of information and university relations at the University of Abuja, quoted Professor Kyari commending the institution for its commitment to upgrading its facilities. However, Kyari also highlighted the need for further improvements in critical areas such as the recruitment and capacity building of resource personnel, enhancement of pathology laboratories, better transportation arrangements, and expanded support for clinical skills development.

The increased admission quota is expected to boost the number of trained medical professionals graduating from the University of Abuja, contributing to efforts to improve healthcare delivery nationwide.
