The Law Students Association of Nigeria (LAWSAN) has frowned at the alleged killing of a 500 level law student of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Augustine Ugwu.

In a statement signed by the National Director, Directorate of Students’ Rights of LAWSAN, Munir Shuaibu Ishaq, on behalf of the Association National President, Law Students Association of Nigeria, Emmanuel E Nwobodo stressed that Nigeria’s law does not recognise extra judicial killings by anyone.

The statment read: “Sequel to the extra judicial killing of Augustine Ugwu by the police reported on the 4th of May 2020, a 500 level law student of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, although his set graduated in 2018, the Law Students Association of Nigeria, through its Directorate of Students’ Rights wishes to make it known to the public that in collaboration with the Nigerian Bar Association, the NBA Nsukka Branch will be taking up the matter.

“Our laws does not recognise extra judicial killings. Any person accused of an offence can only be tried, and punished by a court of law. That underlines the essence of the operation of the rule of law in our society.

“The supreme and exalted task of judging the innocence or guilt of an accused person is the sublime task of God Almighty, and after him, judges appointed by the state who serve as His vicegerents on earth.”
