A popular human rights lawyer and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mr. Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, has bared his mind on the reactions trailing the emergence of Olumide Akpata as the 30th President-elect of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).
“And exactly what for, if you permit me to ask sir?” Adegboruwa asked in a statement made available to TheNigeriaLawyer (TNL)
Adegboruwa said it is not in the interest of the Association to use the victory of Akpata to bash SANs and senior lawyers.
“Once we see the emergence of Mr Akpata as the product of the “rebellion” of young lawyers, then we are killing the NBA ultimately.
“I’ve cautioned once here and I repeat it again that it is not in the interest of the legal profession to use his victory as any bashing for SANs and senior lawyers.”
He opined that Akpata should rather be a “bridge-builder” expressing fear that if things continue that way the result may be that only young lawyers will attend NEC meetings and conferences.
“Or else, it may get to that time when only the young lawyers will attend the NEC meetings, the Conferences and even bankroll all NBA events.
Let’s be careful, please.
We were all once young lawyers and we know the value and impact of senior lawyers in our lives and practice.
“I’m still a young lawyer myself but I want to be mentored and guided as I go along.”
