The fire outbreak at the Canadian High Commission in Abuja earlier today was caused by a diesel tank explosion, according to the Federal Capital Territory branch of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

FEMA spokesperson Nkechi Isa said the fire started around 10:45am when a 2,000-litre diesel tank exploded in the generator house while technicians were servicing two generators. The explosion killed 2 personnel immediately while 2 others sustained severe burns.

The affected persons were contractors from JMD company contracted to service the MIKANO generators. The FCT Fire Service contained the blaze by 12:30pm as ambulances from various agencies provided support.

In his condolence message, President Bola Tinubu sympathized with the Canadian authorities and families of the victims. He assured Canada of Nigeria’s full support and prayed for the repose of the dead and speedy recovery of the injured.

Initial videos showed thick black smoke rising from the diplomatic facility as firefighters battled the blaze. FEMA’s confirmation that it originated from a diesel tank explosion provides clarity on the cause of the tragic incident.
