A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Mr. Matthew Uwuigbe, has died at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, in the Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State, and the police have arrested three people in connection with the death.

The Edo State Police Command has not disclosed a cause of death, and has not suggested that the encounter which preceded it caused it.

The command’s spokesperson, Ms. Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the development to journalists on Tuesday.

She said the command received a report at about 8 p.m. on 5 October that Mr. Uwuigbe had lodged at the hotel and engaged the services of a woman, whom the police identified as Ms. Angela Jacob, aged 21.

According to the police, the lecturer later sent the woman out to buy water for him.

“When she returned, she found him lying dead in the room,” Ms. Ikoedem said.

She said the hotel owner, the hotel manager and the woman had been arrested and were assisting the police with the investigation, and that Mr. Uwuigbe’s body had been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary.

The university’s spokesperson, Mr. Mike Aladenika, confirmed that Mr. Uwuigbe was a member of staff, while stressing that the incident occurred away from the campus.

“We are not denying that he is our staff, but whatever he did and what happened, it is his private life,” he said.

He added that the woman was not a student of the institution. “The girl in question is not our student, and everything happened outside our institution,” he said.

The death follows a number of reported incidents in which people died suddenly in hotels or private accommodation in the company of others.

In July 2025, a lecturer at Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyigba, Kogi State, Mr. Olabode Abimbola-Ibikunle, died at a hotel in the company of a 22-year-old student. The police said the student alerted hotel staff after he collapsed, that he was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, and that an autopsy was being conducted to establish the cause of death.

In July 2026, police in Jigawa State arrested a 20-year-old woman following the sudden death of a 60-year-old man at a hotel in Dutse. The police said the man had checked into the hotel with the woman and developed severe breathing difficulties shortly after ordering a meal, and that detectives recovered a substance suspected to be a sexual enhancement supplement, among other items, while the woman was held to assist the investigation.

In November 2025, a woman was found dead at a hotel in Ore, Ondo State, after spending the night there with a man who subsequently left. The police said an autopsy was scheduled to determine the cause of her death.
