The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, has assured local and foreign investors that the Federal Government is committed to strengthening Nigeria’s legal and institutional framework to protect business interests and provide the confidence and predictability required for investment.

Fagbemi gave the assurance on Tuesday in Copenhagen, Denmark, at a dinner he hosted for members of the Nigerian delegation attending the 2026 International Bar Association Annual Conference. The conference is being held in Copenhagen this week.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by his Special Assistant on Media, Mr. Kamarudeen Ogundele, the Attorney-General said the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was pursuing economic policies and legal reforms aimed at strengthening the country and improving investor confidence.

According to Fagbemi, attracting and retaining investment requires more than economic policies, as investors must also be able to operate within a legal environment where rights are protected, institutions are functional and disputes can be resolved fairly and efficiently.

“The administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains committed to strengthening the rule of law, improving access to justice, modernising the administration of justice, strengthening prosecution and law-enforcement institutions, promoting respect for human rights, and creating a legal environment in which citizens and investors can have confidence,” he said.

The Attorney-General also urged members of the legal profession and other Nigerians to work with the government in strengthening the institutions required to build a more prosperous country.

His remarks placed the rule of law and justice-sector reform at the heart of the government’s investment message, with the administration maintaining that legal certainty and credible institutions are essential to improving Nigeria’s attractiveness to both domestic and international businesses.

The dinner brought together Nigerian lawyers attending the IBA conference, diplomats, government officials, members of Nigerian communities in Denmark and neighbouring Sweden, as well as other guests.

Among those at the gathering was the Minister of State for Works, Bello Musa Goronyo, who described Fagbemi as a man of courage and urged participants to support the reform programme of the Tinubu administration.

Nigeria’s Ambassador to Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Norway, Lola Akande, also stressed the relationship between strong legal institutions and economic confidence.

According to her, the strength, independence and credibility of legal institutions are important not only to citizens seeking protection of their rights but also to investors and international partners seeking certainty in their dealings with Nigeria.

“That is why the work we do here matters. It matters to the individual whose rights require protection. It matters to the investor seeking confidence and predictability. It matters to businesses operating across borders,” Akande said.

Her remarks reinforced Fagbemi’s position that the credibility of the justice system has implications beyond the courtroom, particularly where businesses must assess regulatory stability, enforcement of obligations and the protection of investments before committing capital.

Fagbemi had also urged Nigerian lawyers attending the international conference to use the gathering not merely as a professional networking opportunity but as a platform to identify ideas and partnerships capable of strengthening Nigeria’s justice system.

He said the responsibility of Nigerian lawyers participating in global legal forums was to examine international practices and determine how useful lessons could be adapted to improve justice delivery at home.

“Our greatest responsibility is not simply to learn what the world is doing, rather it is to examine what Nigeria must do better,” he said at the gathering.

The Attorney-General acknowledged that strengthening confidence in the justice system would require collaboration among the government, the Bar, the Bench, academia and the private sector, arguing that no single institution could provide all the answers to the challenges confronting the sector.

He also identified faster justice delivery, stronger institutions and increased use of technology as areas requiring further attention.

Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Yusuf Ali, SAN, who spoke on behalf of the Nigerian delegation, commended Fagbemi for what he described as precedents set in legal victories for Nigeria and for sustaining the gathering of Nigerian delegates since assuming office.
