The Nasarawa State High Court sitting in Lafia has granted bail to a lawyer, Barrister Adah Monday Isah, who is facing charges of criminal conspiracy, kidnapping, mischief and attempted homicide arising from an incident allegedly involving a woman later discovered to be a police officer.

Justice Hassan Shams Shama, sitting as the vacation judge, granted the bail application in Commissioner of Police v. Barrister Adah Monday Isah, Charge No. NSD/L/401C/2026, following an application filed on behalf of the detained lawyer by the Human Rights Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association, Lafia Branch.
The bail application, Motion No. NSD/LF64CM/26, was argued before the court by the Chairman of the NBA Human Rights Committee, Mohammed Danjuma, Esq.
According to information released by the committee, Isah’s arrest and prosecution followed an incident after he had concluded a matter at Chief Magistrate Court 3, Lafia, and was travelling to Abuja.
The committee said that while on his way, a young woman requested a lift to Abuja and was subsequently discovered to be a police officer.
The circumstances surrounding that encounter later resulted in allegations against the lawyer, culminating in charges of criminal conspiracy, kidnapping, mischief and attempted homicide.
The statement did not provide the complete prosecution account of how the alleged offences were said to have arisen from the encounter, and the allegations have not been determined by the court.
Following Isah’s detention, the Chairman of the NBA Lafia Branch directed the branch’s Human Rights Committee to intervene and take steps towards securing his release.
The committee subsequently approached the Nasarawa State High Court during the court vacation and sought bail for the lawyer.
After hearing the application at Court 6, opposite the Federal University Teaching Hospital, Shendam Road, Lafia, Justice Shama granted Isah bail on a ₦5 million bond.
The court further directed the lawyer to provide his National Identification Number, a Certificate of Occupancy, his bank statement of account, an affidavit of means, and a surety resident within the jurisdiction of the court.
The ruling means that Isah is entitled to regain his freedom upon satisfying the conditions imposed by the court while the criminal proceedings continue.
The grant of bail does not amount to an acquittal or determination of the allegations against him, as the substantive charges remain pending before the court.
Justice Shama subsequently adjourned the case to August 31, 2026, for hearing.
Reacting to the development, the NBA Human Rights Committee, Lafia Branch, reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the rights and professional interests of lawyers while ensuring access to due process.
“The NBA Human Rights Committee remains committed to protecting the rights, dignity and professional interests of lawyers and to ensuring that no member of the Bar is denied access to justice or due process,” Danjuma said in the statement.
Isah remains presumed innocent of the allegations unless and until the prosecution establishes the charges against him before a competent court.
