On the occasion of this year’s International Domestic Workers Day, the Centre of Advocacy for Domestic Workers (CADW) expressed its support for domestic workers worldwide and highlighted the need for their rights and well-being to be recognized and protected. CADW called upon the Nigerian government to ratify the Domestic Workers Convention (C189) and emphasized the importance of providing decent work conditions for domestic workers.

International Domestic Workers Day, established by the United Nations, serves as an opportunity to celebrate the invaluable contributions made by domestic workers to the global economy. It also aims to shed light on the challenges they face and draw attention to their needs.

In a statement signed by its Head of Operations, Uchenna Anyaegbuna Esq,

CADW acknowledged the significant efforts and contributions of domestic workers in Nigeria, highlighting their essential role in the country’s economy. However, the organization pointed out that the Domestic Workers Convention, adopted by the International Labour Organization on June 16, 2011, has yet to be domesticated in Nigeria. This lack of implementation has resulted in unfair employment terms, deplorable working and living conditions, as well as various forms of abuse, harassment, and violence experienced by domestic workers at the hands of their employers.

In light of these issues, CADW urged relevant government stakeholders to ratify the Domestic Workers Convention in order to promote and protect the rights of domestic workers. By doing so, Nigeria would contribute to the achievement of Goal 8 of the Sustainable Development Goals, which focuses on Decent Work and Economic Growth.

CADW’s statement also called on the 10th Senate to pass the Domestic Workers Convention (C189) into law, emphasizing the urgent need for improved legal protection and support for domestic workers. The organization emphasized that recognizing and valuing domestic workers as an essential part of the labor force is crucial for achieving fair and sustainable economic growth.

On this International Domestic Workers Day, CADW expressed its gratitude and admiration for domestic workers across Nigeria. Their tireless efforts and contributions, often unrecognized and undervalued, are indispensable to the functioning of households and the economy as a whole.

CADW concluded its statement by encouraging all concerned individuals to show their support by signing a petition, which can be found at https://chng.it/5F4bwtBwDp.

The petition aims to raise awareness and generate momentum for the ratification of the Domestic Workers Convention in Nigeria.
