Anambra State is set to host a major conversation on environmental degradation, climate justice, ecological accountability and rising insecurity as the Anah Center for Social Justice, in collaboration with the NBA Young Lawyers Forum, Onitsha Branch, announces the 5th Edition of the C.O. Anah, SAN Memorial Colloquium.

The colloquium, themed “The Anambra Wound: Climate Justice, Ecological Accountability, and Insecurity,” is scheduled to hold on Friday, June 12, 2026, at the Louis Mbanefo Bar Center, Onitsha, by 11:00 a.m.

The event is expected to bring together members of the Bar and Bench, academics, environmental advocates, policymakers, civil society actors, students, security experts and members of the public for what organisers described as a timely engagement on the environmental and security challenges confronting communities in Anambra State and beyond.

According to the convener, Adaeze Anah, the colloquium is designed to move beyond routine discussions on environmental degradation by examining the deeper consequences of ecological collapse, including insecurity, displacement, social unrest, communal tensions and threats to the future of affected communities.

“The land cries. Communities suffer. Insecurity grows. The environment bears the scars,” Adaeze stated. “The questions are no longer whether these issues exist. The real question is what role the law must play in addressing them.”

One of the keynote speakers expected at the event is CP Emmanuel Ojukwu (Rtd.), a law enforcement analyst, applied psychologist and nation builder, who will speak on “The Ecology-Insecurity Nexus in Anambra State.”

Adaeze said Ojukwu’s presentation would challenge participants to rethink insecurity beyond conventional explanations by examining how erosion, flooding, pollution, loss of livelihoods and environmental neglect can fuel violence, instability, migration and social breakdown.

She described the session as one that would go “beyond the headlines,” adding that attendees should expect “hard truths, eye-opening realities, and insights that will linger long after the event ends.”

Also billed to speak is Ibrahim Musa, an environmental law expert, waste management reformer and policy and communications strategist. He will address “Plastic Pollution in Anambra’s Commercial Corridors,” with focus on the dangers of indiscriminate plastic waste disposal and the urgent need for sustainable waste management policies.

His presentation is expected to offer practical solutions, policy recommendations and innovative approaches aimed at turning environmental challenges into opportunities for sustainable action and community development.

Another speaker, Chuka Osi Anatogu, Esq., described as a justice-focused scholar, legal practitioner and systems thinker, will speak on “Climate Justice and Accountability in Anambra State: Obligations, Failures and the Path to Enforcement.”

Adaeze noted that Anatogu’s session would examine the responsibilities of government institutions, corporate actors and regulatory bodies in addressing environmental harm and enforcing accountability.

“Big conversations need bold minds,” she said, adding that participants should expect “hard questions, fresh perspectives, and conversations that challenge the status quo.”

His presentation is also expected to spark discussions on failures in environmental governance, gaps in enforcement and the need for stronger institutional commitment to climate justice and ecological protection in Anambra State.

Adaeze emphasised that the colloquium is not merely an academic gathering but a platform for practical engagement and policy-focused dialogue capable of influencing meaningful change.

Over the years, the annual C.O. Anah, SAN Memorial Colloquium has grown into a respected platform for intellectual engagement and social advocacy, bringing together leading voices to discuss justice, governance, accountability and national development.

This year’s edition is expected to continue that legacy by placing urgent attention on climate justice, ecological responsibility and the role of legal and institutional frameworks in tackling environmental harm and its wider social consequences.

Participants are expected to engage in discussions on environmental accountability, public policy, climate governance, sustainable development, the security implications of ecological collapse and the role of citizens and institutions in protecting the environment.

Adaeze called on members of the legal profession, environmental stakeholders, researchers, students, public office holders and concerned citizens to attend and contribute to what she described as “a conversation Anambra needs and one that cannot be ignored.”

She described the event as “a legacy of excellence, a platform for impact, and a discussion for the future.”
