Mike Ahamba, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and former lawyer to the late President Muhammadu Buhari, has accused Buhari’s appointees of exploiting the president’s prolonged illness to undermine Nigeria’s progress.
Speaking in an interview with Daily Independent, Ahamba lamented that the administration under Buhari failed significantly in key areas such as the economy and national security, especially after the president’s six-month hospital stay abroad.
“I went close to him, believing that he could do something about the indiscipline in Nigeria, especially corruption. Unfortunately, I cannot say he achieved that during his tenure,” Ahamba said.
He added, “From the depth of my heart, I do not solely blame Buhari. Those responsible for the country’s decline are still around. The Buhari that came out of the hospital was no longer the same in performance. Much of his energy was drained after six months away, and people around him took advantage of this to destroy the country.”
Ahamba also weighed in on the upcoming 2027 general elections, urging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to allow the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a free, fair, and credible poll.
He emphasized the need for quality leadership beyond mere wealth, noting that Nigerians should not equate financial status with competence.
“The way forward is for people to stop seeing public service as a means of self-aggrandizement,” he said. “The average Nigerian must understand that wealth is not a qualification for leadership. Most importantly, every Nigerian has the capacity to change the economy.”
