The Chief Judge of Bayelsa State, Justice Kate Abiri, has ordered the suspension of court sittings in the state due to the threat of coronavirus pandemic.

She said the suspension was with effect from Tuesday for the first instance of two weeks.

Justice Abiri made the announcement in a statement on Wednesday by the Head of Media and Information at the state judiciary, Julius Nyanayo.

According to her, the suspension was in line with the directive from the office of the Chief Justice of the Federation, Justice Tanko Muhammad, as part of the measures tocontain the spread of COVID-19 in the country.

She asked all judges, magistrates and chairmen of customary courts to adhere to the directive.

Justice Abiri said the directive was aimed at protecting judicial workers and litigants from contracting the disease.

The state chief judge, however, said the courts would only be open to matters that “are urgent, essential or time-bound, according to extant laws.”
