*Refutes Allegation That His Election Was Sponsored By Gov. Fayemi

Mr. Sunday Asefon, the President of the National Association of Nigerian Students(NANS) has stated that the Association will shut down all private Universities in the country following the industrial action embarked on by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

TheNigeriaLawyer reports that ASUU has been on strike since March, 2020. Meanwhile, Mr. Asefon noted that the strike has adversely affected the Nigerian students and thus, a need for a decisive action.

Therefore, he said the Association will engage the Federal government and ASUU with a view to ensuring that the strike is called off as soon as possible.

Consequently, he noted that after consultations with both parties, in the event that the strike is not called off, NANS will shut down all tertiary institutions in the country.

In another development, the NANS President has debunked rumors making rounds that his election was sponsored by the Governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi.

“I have not set my eyes on Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State. No politician sponsored me. I consolidated on my mandate and I was not sponsored by anybody. The students accepted my candidacy and the students gave me their mandates,” he said, adding that ““I will not be distracted despite attempts to frame me. I have been given the mandate to raise the consciousness of the Nigerian students and liberate them from the shackles and manacles of oppressors”.

Besides, he said the violence that marred the NANS election was due to a little misunderstanding and that no student was shot in the process.

“I didn’t see any student with any gun. Security operatives shot to restore peace and scare those who wanted to disrupt the election,” he said.
