President Muhammadu Buhari has directed that all members of the Federal Executive Council running for elective offices to submit their letters of resignation on or before Monday the 16th of May, 2022.

The Minister of information and Culture, Lai Mohamed, disclosed this on Wednesday during the Federal Executive Council meeting.

He said that the directive excludes the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo because he is an elected member of the cabinet.

The Information Minister affirmed that if there are any amendments or additions to this directive they would be made shortly.

According to the Minister, the directive might involve political appointees, if the need arises.

Asked if the directive would be extended to other Federal appointees outside the cabinet like the Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele, who may join the presidential race, Mohammed said only Ministers are asked to resign as of now.

“As of this moment, the mandate I have is for members of the Federal Executive Council. Subsequently it might affect other political appointees but that will be made known. If there is going to be any amendment or any inclusion, you will be informed in due course,” he stressed.

A visibly angry President said he had received the resignation of Nwajiuba seeking to be President.

He said: “I expect other members of this council seeking to be President to resign with immediate effect.”

He singled out the Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba for braving the odds to quit to avoid conflict of interest.

But other Ministers seeking to be Governors, Senators and House of Representatives members were busy trying to seek clarifications if they were affected.

The President gave the quit notice at the tail end of the Federal Executive Council.

A source in the cabinet said: “We were not clear if this directive will affect other ministers aspiring to be governors, Senators and House of Representatives members.

“We are expecting more clarifications soon.”

Those affected are Ministers of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi; Niger Delta, Godswill Akpabio; Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige; Science, Technology and Innovation, Ogbonnaya Onu, Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba; State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, all of whom have joined the presidential race on the platform of the All Progressive Congress (APC).

Others are the Justice and Attorney-General, Abubakar Malami; Minister of State for Mines and Steel, Uche Ogar, who is running for governorship position in Cross Rivers State; Minister of Women Affairs, Paulline Tallen, who declared her ambition to contest for a senatorial seat in Plateau State.
