The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), through its affiliate, the Hotel and Personal Service Senior Staff Association, on Monday picketed the Abuja Continental Hotel over allegations of workers’ rights violations, unfair labour practices, poor working conditions and restrictions on employees’ freedom to unionise.

Members of the union converged on the hotel premises as early as 6:00 a.m., where they attempted to gain access but were reportedly stopped at the entrance by security personnel.
Following the development, the protesters commenced picketing at the hotel gate, blocking access to the premises and displaying placards condemning what they described as anti-union practices by the hotel management.
The union specifically accused the management of preventing workers from exercising their constitutional and labour rights to freedom of association and membership of a trade union.
It also raised concerns over alleged indecent working conditions and other practices it said were detrimental to the welfare of employees.
Speaking with journalists during the protest, union officials said several attempts had previously been made to engage the hotel management over the grievances but that the efforts failed to produce a resolution.
According to the union, the failure of dialogue left it with no alternative but to commence industrial action through picketing.
The protest disrupted access to the hotel as union members maintained their presence at the entrance and demanded that management recognise the workers’ right to organise and belong to a trade union.
At one point, the protesters reportedly attempted to lock the hotel gate, but the move was resisted by police officers and some hotel officials.
There was a heavy presence of security personnel at the premises, including officers of the Nigeria Police Force and the State Security Service (SSS), as the picketing continued.
Despite the security presence, the workers maintained their protest and continued to press their demands for improved labour conditions and respect for freedom of association.
The Hotel and Personal Service Senior Staff Association accused the hotel management of engaging in practices it considered inconsistent with the welfare and rights of workers, particularly in relation to unionisation and working conditions.
The union maintained that employees should be allowed to freely associate, organise and join a trade union without interference or intimidation.
It indicated that the picketing would continue until the issues raised were addressed and meaningful steps taken to resolve the dispute between the workers and the hotel management.
As of the time of filing the report, no resolution had been announced, while access to the hotel remained affected by the industrial action.
The allegations against the hotel management remain claims by the union, and no response from the management was contained in the material available at the time of the report.
