Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, on Thursday met President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja and later visited the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, days after securing a second term in the August 15 governorship election.

Adeleke, who contested on the platform of the Accord Party, said his visit to Tinubu was primarily to express appreciation to the President for what he described as respect for the democratic process and for allowing the election to proceed without interference.

The governor arrived at the State House at about 5:20 p.m. and was driven through the forecourt directly to the President’s office for a closed-door meeting.

He was accompanied by the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and some Osun State officials, including his campaign director-general and chief of staff.

During the meeting, Adeleke presented his Certificate of Return to the President following his declaration by the Independent National Electoral Commission as winner of the governorship election.

INEC declared Adeleke re-elected after he polled 511,067 votes to defeat Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress, who scored 444,815 votes.

Adeleke won in 19 of Osun State’s 30 local government areas, while Oyebamiji emerged victorious in 11.

Speaking briefly with State House correspondents after the meeting, Adeleke described Tinubu as the “father of the nation” and said the President deserved commendation for allowing what he characterised as a free and fair electoral process.

“Yeah, that is why I’m here to thank Mr. President, the father of the nation, because he fought for this democracy,” Adeleke said.

“That is why he allowed free and fair election, and that is the result. That is why I’m here, to say thank you to ensure that democracy lives in Nigeria.”

Adeleke’s remarks effectively credited the President with maintaining neutrality and allowing the electoral process in Osun to run its course, despite the APC fielding Oyebamiji against him.

Hours after leaving the Presidential Villa, the governor continued his consultations in Abuja with a visit to Wike.

A photograph of the meeting shared by Wike’s media aide, Lere Olayinka, showed Adeleke and the FCT Minister shaking hands while holding the governor’s Certificate of Return.

“Governor Ademola Adeleke visits the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike,” Olayinka captioned the photograph.

No details were immediately disclosed about the discussions between Adeleke and Wike.

The meetings with Tinubu and Wike came shortly after Adeleke formally received his Certificate of Return following an election that returned him to office with a margin of 66,252 votes over his closest challenger.

The governor’s visits to prominent political figures in Abuja also come as attention shifts from the concluded election to the political and administrative engagements that will follow his re-election.
