All Progressives Congress governorship candidate in the August 15 Osun State election, Bola Oyebamiji, has said he respects the position of the Independent National Electoral Commission following his defeat by incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke, while backing his party’s ongoing review of the election outcome.

Oyebamiji, in a statement posted on his X account on Tuesday, also raised concerns over what he described as a growing wave of hostility and violence against APC members and supporters in the aftermath of the election.

INEC declared Adeleke, candidate of the Accord Party, winner of the governorship election after he polled 511,067 votes, while Oyebamiji secured 444,815 votes.

Reacting three days after the election, Oyebamiji acknowledged that his campaign had expected a different result but said he would, for the time being, respect the position announced by the electoral body.

“Although, we had hoped for a different outcome in the election, in the meantime, we respect the position of the electoral umpire and I totally support the decision of our party in its ongoing review of the outcome of the election,” he said.

The APC candidate thanked voters, volunteers, party members and leaders across Osun State who supported his candidacy and the alternative programme his campaign presented to the electorate.

He said he remained proud of the campaign and grateful to those who placed their confidence in him.

Oyebamiji stressed that while the election and campaign had ended, the principles and developmental objectives around which his candidacy was built remained alive.

“The campaign has come to an end and the election is over, but the values and causes we championed are alive. We would continue to work for effective, inclusive and rapid development of our dear Osun,” he said.

He urged his supporters to remain peaceful, responsible and actively engaged in their communities, while continuing to work towards the collective interest and development of the state.

Oyebamiji, however, expressed concern over alleged attacks on APC members and supporters, claiming that incidents recorded before the election had worsened since the conclusion of voting.

“At the same time, I wish to alert the State Government and security agents to the growing trend of hostility and violence against our members and supporters,” he said.

According to him, attacks allegedly directed at APC supporters before the election had “taken another dimension in the last 24 hours.”

He consequently called on the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to intervene and protect residents from violence, while urging APC members and supporters to remain calm and go about their activities peacefully.

Oyebamiji maintained that despite the electoral setback, his commitment to the development of Osun State remained unchanged, saying the ideas and causes promoted during the campaign would continue beyond the election.

He concluded by expressing appreciation to everyone who supported his candidacy, saying he remained proud of the campaign conducted by his team and thankful for the confidence placed in him.
