Technology giant Google has appealed a United States federal court ruling that found the company illegally maintained monopolies in online search and related advertising markets.

The company filed the appeal on Friday, challenging a 2024 decision by U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta, who held that Google unlawfully strengthened its dominance by paying billions of dollars annually to companies, including Apple, to make its search engine the default option on devices and browsers.

Google, in its filing before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, argued that the lower court made legal errors in reaching its decision.

The company maintained that its agreements with device makers and browser developers did not prevent them from promoting competing search services such as Microsoft Bing.

Google further argued that it became successful in the market through “hard work, bold innovation, and shrewd business decisions,” describing its search engine as a superior product that users preferred.

The appeal also challenges a remedies order requiring Google to share certain search-related data with competitors. The order could potentially benefit rival search providers and artificial intelligence companies, including OpenAI.

If Google succeeds at the appellate court, the ruling and the data-sharing order could be overturned.

The U.S. Department of Justice is expected to file its own arguments in July. A spokesperson for the department declined to comment.

If Google loses at the Court of Appeals, the company could still take the matter to the U.S. Supreme Court.
