The United States has imposed temporary entry restrictions on non-citizens who have recently travelled from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda or South Sudan, following a deadly Ebola outbreak in the region.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, CDC, announced the measure on Monday, saying the restriction applies to non-US passport holders who have been in any of the three countries within the previous 21 days.

According to the CDC, the order takes effect immediately and will remain in force for 30 days.

“This order will be in effect for 30 days, effective immediately,” the agency said.

The CDC said the move is part of efforts to contain the spread of the outbreak and strengthen public health protection measures at US ports of entry.

It added that it would enhance port health protection response activities, contact tracing, laboratory testing capacity and hospital readiness nationwide.

In a separate statement, the CDC also said it is supporting interagency partners coordinating the safe withdrawal of a small number of Americans directly affected by the outbreak.

The development comes after the World Health Organisation, WHO, declared the Ebola outbreak in the DRC and Uganda a public health emergency of international concern on Saturday.

The designation is the highest alert level under WHO regulations and is used for extraordinary public health events that pose cross-border risks and require coordinated international action.

So far, 65 deaths and at least 246 suspected cases have been recorded following the outbreak in Ituri Province of the DRC.

The WHO said the outbreak has not yet reached the threshold of a pandemic emergency under international health regulations, but raised concern that there are currently no approved vaccines or therapeutics specifically targeting the Bundibugyo strain currently spreading, unlike the Ebola Zaire strain.

The outbreak has also affected foreign medical workers. An international Christian aid organisation, Serge, confirmed that one of its members, American doctor Peter Stafford, who had been working at a hospital in Bunia, northeastern DRC, tested positive for the Bundibugyo ebolavirus variant.

Two other doctors working with the charity, including Stafford’s wife, were also exposed to infected patients.

Stafford is being moved to Germany for treatment, while his family, including his four children, and the exposed doctor are also being transferred there for observation. They are reportedly asymptomatic.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, NCDC, has said it is closely monitoring the Ebola outbreak.
