A six-year-old Nigerian girl has died after falling from a high-rise apartment building in Toronto, Canada.

Toronto police said the incident happened on Sunday evening at a residential building near Chalkfarm Drive and Jane Street in North York.

Officers were called to the building at about 8:15 p.m. following a report of “unknown trouble.” On arrival, they found the body of the child, who investigators said had fallen from her bedroom window.

Police did not confirm the exact floor from which the girl fell, but a spokesperson, Amy Davey, said in an email that the fall was from “a very high level.”

“It does not appear to be suspicious, but the investigation is ongoing,” Davey said.

Local reports said the child’s mother was in Nigeria at the time of the tragedy, while neighbours claimed the girl had been staying with a family friend who lives on the top floor of the building.

A neighbour, Jahlique James, said the child lived on the 28th floor of the building. She described the incident as heartbreaking, adding that she often saw the girl and her mother around the building.

“It’s just very heartbreaking. My heart goes out to the family,” James said.

Other residents also described the child as lively and well known within the community.

One neighbour said the girl frequently played around the building and was familiar to many residents.

“She used to come here all the time and play. She was a lively kid. It’s very, very sad,” the resident said.

Another resident said the incident had devastated the building community, noting that the child was often seen in the area, including during school runs.

“It’s crazy that I will never see this child again. I see her every morning. It’s heartbreaking,” the resident said.

Residents also raised questions about how the fall could have happened, saying the building’s windows reportedly have safety mechanisms meant to prevent them from opening fully.

“To be fair, they do have precautions on these windows to make sure these things don’t happen,” one resident said.

Another resident added that the windows are bolted and cannot be fully opened, deepening confusion around the circumstances of the incident.

The building is an approximately 30-storey brick apartment tower within a complex of four high-rise buildings built in the early 1970s. It is located near Chalkfarm Park and surrounded by a large parking lot and grass lawns.

The property management company, Greenwin, which manages the building at 200 Chalkfarm Drive, said it was deeply saddened by the incident.

Stephen Adler, a spokesperson for Greenwin, said the company’s “safety and well-being” priority remains paramount and that it is fully cooperating with the police investigation.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident, and our hearts and sympathies are with the child’s family and all others affected,” Adler said in a statement.

The company said emergency services responded promptly but declined to comment on the condition or inspection history of the windows, citing the ongoing investigation.

Toronto police said officers would remain at the scene pending the outcome of an autopsy report.

Police maintained that the case does not appear suspicious at this stage, but investigations are still ongoing.
