Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, and former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, on Sunday held a closed-door meeting with leaders of the Nigeria Democratic Congress in Abuja.

The meeting, which took place at the Guzape residence of the NDC National Leader and former Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, was attended by the party’s National Chairman, Moses Cleopas, and other key stakeholders.

Obi and Kwankwaso, who came third and fourth respectively in the last presidential election, arrived at the venue at about 5:18 p.m.

Their arrival drew a crowd of supporters under the Obi-Kwankwaso Movement, who chanted “O-K is okay” as both leaders were ushered into the premises.

Kwankwaso was dressed in a white babanriga with his signature red-and-white Kwankwasiyya cap, while Obi appeared in an all-black kaftan and matching cap.

The meeting is believed to be part of ongoing political realignments among opposition figures ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Obi and Kwankwaso had earlier aligned with the African Democratic Congress as part of a coalition seeking to unseat President Bola Tinubu.

However, their future in the ADC became uncertain following the leadership crisis in the party and the Supreme Court’s directive that the matter be referred back to the Federal High Court.

While both politicians confirmed talks with the NDC, Obi has made it clear that his stay in the ADC has ended.

Kwankwaso, on the other hand, has asked his supporters to watch out, saying his next line of action would be made known soon.

The development comes barely 24 hours after Buba Galadima, Secretary of the Board of Trustees of the New Nigeria People’s Party, disclosed that two prominent politicians would unveil a new political platform on Monday.

Galadima made the disclosure at a stakeholders’ meeting of the Obi-Kwankwaso Movement in Abuja, amid growing uncertainty surrounding opposition coalitions.

Although he did not name the platform, sources close to the former governors indicated that both leaders were finalising arrangements to align with the Nigeria Democratic Congress, a relatively new platform reportedly linked to Dickson.

The meeting comes at a time of heightened political manoeuvring among opposition leaders seeking to build a united front ahead of the 2027 elections.

Recent efforts to form a broad-based coalition, particularly around the ADC, have suffered setbacks due to internal disagreements, litigation and high-profile defections.

Obi recently exited the ADC, citing concerns over internal divisions and alleged external interference.

Kwankwaso, leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement and a major political figure in the North, has also remained central to opposition coalition talks, with his support base considered critical to any viable challenge in 2027.

The emergence of alternative platforms such as the Nigeria Democratic Congress suggests a possible shift in strategy by opposition actors seeking to consolidate influence outside existing party structures.
