The Nigerian Law Society has felicitated Nigerian workers on the occasion of Workers’ Day, reaffirming its commitment to the protection of labour rights, fair working conditions and social justice.

In a statement issued by its National Secretariat in Abuja on April 30, 2026, and signed by its President, Chief Mela Audu Nunghe, SAN, the NLS said it joined millions of Nigerians in celebrating the resilience, dedication and sacrifice of workers across the country.

The society described Nigerian workers as the backbone of the nation, noting that public servants, private sector employees, professionals and artisans continue to keep the country running despite difficult conditions.

According to the NLS, Nigerian workers are currently facing severe economic pressures, including the rising cost of living, insecurity, unstable policies, delayed wages and inadequate remuneration.

The society said these challenges have tested the spirit of the workforce, but noted that workers have continued to persevere in the face of adversity.

“We recognise that Nigerian workers are currently navigating severe economic headwinds: rising cost of living, insecurity, unstable policies, and delayed or inadequate remuneration,” the statement read.

“These upheavals have tested the spirit of even the most dedicated workforce. Yet, in true Nigerian fashion, you persevere.”

The NLS assured workers that they are not alone, saying the society stands with them in the struggle for dignity, fairness and justice in the workplace.

It reaffirmed its commitment to advocating fair labour practices and decent working conditions across the country.

The society also pledged to provide pro bono legal support to workers whose rights are violated, while engaging government and employers to prioritise workers’ welfare as a matter of national security and justice.

“The Nigerian Law Society wants every worker to know: you are not alone. We stand with you,” the statement added.

The NLS said the law remains a shield for workers and promised to continue deploying its legal expertise to defend collective bargaining rights, prompt payment of wages and safe workplaces.

It urged workers not to lose hope, describing them as the anchor of the nation even in difficult times.

“No matter the turbulence, the law remains your shield. The NLS will continue to deploy its legal expertise to defend collective bargaining rights, prompt payment of wages, and safe workplaces,” it stated.

The society encouraged workers to take pride in their labour, rest, reflect and recharge as they mark Workers’ Day.

It expressed belief that a new dawn is possible in Nigeria, one in which the dignity of work is fully honoured and workers receive the just fruits of their labour.

“Happy Workers’ Day to all Nigerian workers. May your strength never fail, and may justice always prevail,” the statement concluded.
