The Nigerian legal and education communities are mourning the passing of Mrs. Yinka Ogunde, renowned education advocate, entrepreneur, and wife of Senior Advocate of Nigeria Oluwemimo (Wemimo) Ogunde SAN, who died on Easter Sunday, April 5, 2026, at the Harley Street Clinic in London, United Kingdom. She was 62 years old and was surrounded by family at the time of her passing.

Mrs. Ogunde’s death has triggered an outpouring of grief across Nigeria’s education sector, where she was widely regarded as one of the most influential advocates for education reform, teacher development, and school-parent engagement in the country’s history.

Her husband, Wemimo Ogunde SAN, is the principal counsel at Wemimo Ogunde & Co and has been a member of the Nigerian Bar since 1983. The legal community has rallied around him and the family as they navigate the loss.

Mrs. Ogunde was the founder of Edumark Consult, a leading education consulting organisation, and the Concerned Parents and Educators Initiative — a platform that championed education reform, advocacy for better standards, and meaningful engagement between parents, schools, and educators.

Through Edumark Consult, she impacted over 6,000 educational institutions across Nigeria, organised major education conferences — including the highly regarded Training of School Owners and Senior Educators summit — and mentored thousands of school owners, administrators, and teachers.

She was widely described as a “driver of education reforms,” a “champion of quality education,” and a visionary who transformed Nigeria’s education landscape through decades of tireless advocacy and practical intervention.

Among the most poignant tributes came from a colleague and mentee who described Mrs. Ogunde’s transformative impact on her career and life.

“God’s agent who showcased me and my most fiery message and other potentials to the Education Sector,” the colleague wrote, recounting how Mrs. Ogunde invited her to speak at the 2019 Training of School Owners and Senior Educators conference at a pivotal moment in her career.

“I was a first-time attendee and I was a speaker. The topic: ‘Alternative Discipline Strategies’ an advocacy that I was championing without fear and with no regrets till today,” she stated.

The colleague described Mrs. Ogunde as “a marketer extraordinaire, a passionate Eduleader, a galvanizer of talented people, a super platform builder, my mentor and super auntie.”

In a detail that captured the depth of Mrs. Ogunde’s character, the colleague revealed that even while on her sick bed, Mrs. Ogunde remained concerned about the wellbeing of others.

“She on her sick bed still cared about me as I was also going through a critical illness at the same time. She is a friend, a mentor and my family. I honestly cannot describe how I feel about her exit yet, but there is some sense of being orphaned,” the colleague wrote.

The news of Mrs. Ogunde’s passing broke in early April 2026 and spread rapidly across education circles, social media platforms, and professional networks, triggering widespread mourning.

Tributes described her variously as a “visionary,” “mother of education reform,” “relentless advocate,” and someone who “lit up hearts” in the education sector.

“This is a rude shock. Mama Yinka Ogunde was such a driver of education reforms in Nigeria. She will be greatly missed,” one tribute read.

“We mourn the passing of an extraordinary woman. Her legacy lives on in the lives she touched,” another stated.

“A very big loss to the academic world. Mummy O was one figure that lights up my heart,” a school owner wrote.

Former colleagues from her earlier career at Oceanic Bank, school owners, parents, and educators shared personal stories of how she inspired them, helped their institutions, or pushed for positive change in Nigeria’s education system.

Before founding Edumark Consult and dedicating herself fully to education advocacy, Mrs. Ogunde had a career in banking and business. Her transition to education was driven by a passionate conviction that Nigeria’s education sector needed strong advocates who combined business acumen with genuine commitment to improving standards.

Her work with the Concerned Parents and Educators Initiative reflected her belief that meaningful education reform required the active engagement of parents, not just educators and government a philosophy that distinguished her approach from many other education advocates.

Burial arrangements for Mrs. Ogunde include a service at St. John’s Anglican Church in Iyere-Owo, Ondo State connecting her final rites to her family’s roots in the ancient Ondo State town.

The legal community has extended condolences to Wemimo Ogunde SAN, whose distinguished career at the Bar has been a parallel story of professional excellence alongside his late wife’s advocacy in the education sector.

The couple’s combined impact  he in law, she in education —represents a partnership that touched two of Nigeria’s most important professional communities, making her loss felt across both worlds.

Mrs. Ogunde is survived by her husband and children.

May her soul rest in peace.
