A Magistrate Court sitting in Ilorin, Kwara State, on Tuesday, ordered the remand of two commercial tricyclists, Mohamud Saad and Sunday Emmanuel, over the alleged assault of a human rights lawyer, Taofiq Olateju, and his wife, Monsurat, following a dispute linked to road obstruction.

The defendants were brought before the court on allegations bordering on criminal conspiracy, assault, and causing hurt, after an incident that reportedly occurred on Sunday along a busy route in Ilorin.

Our corresponden gathered that the altercation began when the lawyer and his wife were heading out and encountered a blockage allegedly caused by the tricyclists, prompting a verbal exchange that escalated into violence.

Recounting the incident, Olateju said the confrontation happened directly opposite his residence, noting that what started as a polite request quickly spiralled out of control.

“They assaulted my wife and me opposite my family house on Sunday. My wife sustained injuries and had to be taken to the hospital. Even while they were being taken to prison, they were still threatening my family and me,” he said.

Sources familiar with the case disclosed that Monsurat sustained injuries to her right hand during the attack and was subsequently hospitalised for treatment.

The prosecution hinged its case on a First Information Report presented before the court, detailing how the suspects allegedly acted in concert to assault the couple after being asked to ease traffic flow on the road.

The FIR read in part, “Criminal conspiracy, assault, and causing hurt contrary to Sections 97, 267, and 244 of the Penal Code Law: On March 29, 2026, at about 1640hrs, one Taofiq Olateju ‘M’ of 24 Wahab Folawiyo Road, Ilorin, in the company of his wife, Monsurat Olateju ‘F’ of the same address, came to ‘C’ Division, Oja Oba, Ilorin, and reported that on the same date at about 1600hrs, he was on his way to Adifa Junction towards Gambari Area, Ilorin.

“While he was held up by tricyclists causing an obstruction on the main road, he came down and spoke politely to you, Mohamud Saad ‘M’ of Adifa Area, Ilorin, and you, Sunday Emmanuel ‘M’ of No. 5 Ganiki, Sango, Ilorin, to allow other road users to pass.

“But instead of taking correction, you, Mohamud Saad ‘M’, and you, Sunday Emmanuel, conspired together and made abusive remarks about the complainant’s person and beat him and his wife.

“However, in the process of beating them, the complainant’s wife sustained an injury to her right hand.

“During police interrogation, you both confessed to the above-mentioned allegation. You thereby committed the above-mentioned offences.”

During proceedings, the defendants denied the allegations contained in the report.

Ruling on the matter on Tuesday, Magistrate Mrs O. M. Adebosin ordered that the two defendants be remanded at the Oke-Kura Correctional Facility pending further proceedings.

The case was subsequently adjourned until April 28, 2026, for further mention.
