The Nigerian Bar Association has condemned the recent killings in Jos, Plateau State, describing the attacks on residents during Palm Sunday as “gruesome” and unacceptable.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the NBA President, Afam Osigwe, said the violence, which left several people dead and others injured, highlights the worsening insecurity facing citizens across the country.

The association said the incident was particularly tragic as it occurred on a significant Christian observance.

“That this tragedy occurred on Palm Sunday, a sacred day for Christians marking the beginning of Holy Week, makes the incident even more heartbreaking.

“A day meant for prayer, reflection, and hope was instead turned into a day of fear, bloodshed, and mourning,” the statement read.

It added that families and communities were thrown into grief instead of returning home peacefully from worship, stressing that the recurring attacks must not be allowed to continue.

The NBA warned that repeated killings without accountability were fostering a culture of impunity and eroding public confidence in the state’s ability to protect lives.

“When perpetrators of mass violence continue to evade justice, it sends a dangerous message that human life is expendable. Citizens begin to lose faith in the ability of the state to protect them, and communities are left to live in constant fear,” the statement said.

The body called on security agencies to swiftly identify, apprehend and prosecute those responsible for the attacks, while urging both federal and state governments to strengthen security in vulnerable communities.

“We therefore call on security agencies to swiftly identify, apprehend, and prosecute those responsible for the Palm Sunday killings. The Federal and State Governments must immediately strengthen security presence in vulnerable communities in Plateau State and other flashpoints across the country,” it stated.

The NBA also emphasised the need for improved intelligence gathering and proactive response mechanisms to prevent further attacks.

It extended condolences to the families of victims and the people of Plateau State, expressing solidarity with those affected by the violence.

Citing Section 33 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which guarantees the right to life, the NBA stressed that the protection of lives and property remains the primary duty of government.

It stressed that every Nigerian, regardless of ethnicity, religion or location, has an inviolable right to life and security, noting that failure to protect these rights undermines public confidence, national cohesion and the rule of law.

In response to the violence, the Plateau State Government, under Governor Caleb Mutfwang, imposed a 48-hour curfew in Jos North, effective from midnight on March 29 until April 1, 2026.

The governor confirmed on Tuesday that 28 residents were killed in the attack.

He described the violence as “barbaric and unprovoked” and assured residents that investigations were underway to apprehend the culprits.
