Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, has raised an alarm over the disturbing decline of the Nigerian legal profession, documenting 20 recent incidents of misconduct and ethical breaches that he says have desecrated the temple of justice.

In a statement released on Saturday, Falana painted a grim picture of a justice system “under siege — not only from external pressures but from within its own ranks,” calling on the Nigerian Bar Association to act decisively to restore ethical standards within the profession.

Falana lamented that the Nigerian legal profession, once revered as the custodian of justice and the conscience of society, has witnessed a disturbing decline marked by misconduct, ethical breaches, and the steady desecration of the courtroom.

“Across the country, courtrooms that ought to symbolize order, decorum, and the rule of law have increasingly degenerated into arenas of chaos and disgrace,” Falana stated.

The Senior Advocate documented multiple reported incidents of lawyers physically assaulting one another within court premises.

“There have been multiple reported incidents of lawyers physically assaulting one another within court premises, exchanging blows, wielding chairs, and even being docked for violent altercations during proceedings,” Falana said.

“These shameful episodes represent not only individual lapses but a collective embarrassment to the legal profession.”

Beyond physical misconduct, Falana highlighted a deeper crisis of professional indiscipline.

“Senior lawyers have disrupted proceedings in open court, undermining judicial authority and eroding respect for due process,” he stated.

“More troubling are cases where lawyers facing criminal allegations have attempted to improperly approach judges, raising grave concerns about the ethical foundations of the bar.”

Falana noted that judicial officers themselves have sounded the alarm about the deteriorating state of the profession.

“Some have openly warned against interference and undue influence, while others have exposed attempts at bribery and financial inducement,” he said.

“In certain tribunals, judges have revealed attempts to compromise proceedings through monetary offers, indicating a justice system increasingly vulnerable to manipulation.”

The crisis extends beyond the conduct of lawyers alone, Falana observed.

“State actors and security agencies have, in some instances, invaded courtrooms, re-arrested defendants within judicial premises, and disrupted proceedings to the point where judges and lawyers were forced to flee,” he stated.

“There have also been persistent reports of harassment of legal practitioners, obstruction of access to courtrooms, and interference with the right to legal representation — actions that strike at the heart of fair hearing and the rule of law.”

Falana also highlighted what he described as alarming public revelations suggesting high-level interference in the judicial process.

“Statements by political actors indicating informal engagements with judicial officers, as well as open disregard for court orders, have further eroded public confidence in the judiciary,” he said.

At the administrative level, the Senior Advocate noted that allegations of extortion by judicial officials continue to surface.

“Warnings have been issued that the practice of ‘mobilizing’ bailiffs constitutes bribery. The proliferation of conflicting court orders — often linked to forum shopping and jurisdictional manipulation — has become a recurring feature of the legal landscape,” Falana stated.

To underscore the gravity of the decline, Falana presented 20 recent incidents illustrating the scale of misconduct and institutional decay within the legal system:

  1. Lawyers exchanging blows inside courtroom
  2. Two lawyers fighting inside courtroom
  3. Two female lawyers docked for fighting in court
  4. Two female lawyers fighting in court
  5. Two popular Nigerian lawyers fighting with chairs in court
  6. Two lawyers fighting in court during proceedings
  7. Lawyers fighting inside courtroom
  8. Senior lawyer interrupting LP proceedings in court
  9. Judge exposing attempt by lawyer facing forgery charge to meet him privately
  10. Judge warning lawyers against interference after granting bail
  11. Ministerial nominee explaining why he disobeyed court orders
  12. SAN and six other lawyers to face panel over conflicting court orders
  13. Judge and lawyers fleeing as DSS operatives invaded court to rearrest defendant
  14. Lawyer petitioning Chief Judge over DSS harassment and blocking court access during trial
  15. Judge exposing lawyer who tried to bribe him
  16. Tribunal judge raising alarm of financial inducement
  17. Senator’s statement about wife extending help to judicial colleagues as Appeal Court President
  18. Political figure recalling meeting Supreme Court Justices in their villages during legal battle
  19. Judicial officials extorting lawyers in Lagos courts
  20. Judge stating that lawyers mobilizing/paying bailiffs are giving bribes

“These incidents, widely reported across multiple platforms, represent a pattern, not isolated occurrences,” Falana emphasised.

The Senior Advocate called on the Nigerian Bar Association to take up the documented cases and act decisively.

“The Nigerian Bar Association, as the umbrella body of legal practitioners, cannot afford to remain passive,” Falana declared.

“It must act decisively to investigate these cases, enforce disciplinary measures, and restore ethical standards within the profession.”

He concluded: “The temple of justice must not be allowed to collapse under the weight of misconduct, impunity, and institutional decay.”

Falana’s statement adds to a growing chorus of voices within the legal profession calling for urgent reform and accountability.

His detailed documentation of 20 specific incidents — ranging from physical violence in courtrooms to allegations of judicial corruption and interference by security agencies — presents a comprehensive indictment of the current state of the Nigerian justice system.

The call for the NBA to investigate these cases and enforce disciplinary measures places the responsibility squarely on the profession’s regulatory body to demonstrate that it can police its own members and restore public confidence in the legal system.

With the 2027 elections approaching and election-related litigation expected to intensify, the state of the judiciary and the conduct of lawyers will come under even greater scrutiny — making Falana’s intervention particularly timely and significant.
