Kehinde Adesanya, a 37-year-old nurse, has been remanded at the Ibara Correctional Centre by an Abeokuta magistrate court over alleged conspiracy, attempted abortion, and murder of Victoria Ariyo, a corps member in Oyo state.

Ariyo, who was serving in Abeokuta south LGA, died last Tuesday from complications arising from a suspected abortion procedure.

Her remains were reportedly interred at Kobape Cemetery along the Kobape-Sagamu road in the state capital.

On Monday, Abbas Olalekan, a staff member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in the state, was arraigned before a magistrate court in Abeokuta over alleged conspiracy and attempt to procure abortion, which led to Ariyo’s death.

Olalekan, who resides in the Mosafueto area of Oke-Ata, Abeokuta, was said to have procured abortion drugs that allegedly led to the corps member’s death.

He was, however, granted bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum by A.K. Araba, the magistrate, who ruled that one of the sureties must be a relative, while the other must be gainfully employed.

Pending the perfection of the bail conditions, the magistrate remanded him at the Ibara Correctional Centre and adjourned the case until April 14 for further hearing.

However, on Thursday, Adesanya was arraigned before the magistrate court on a four-count charge bordering on conspiracy, attempt to procure abortion, and murder of the corps member.

Moving an exparte motion, Solomon Babalola, police counsel, prayed the court for an order to remand the defendant in custody.

According to NAN, Babalola sought the defendant’s remand for 60 days in the first instance at the Ibara Correctional Centre, pending legal advice from the state Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

He told the court that the alleged offences were committed between January and March in the Ikereku area of Laderin, Abeokuta.

He alleged that the defendant conspired with others now at large to procure an abortion for Ariyo in a bid to terminate a pregnancy, adding that the drugs allegedly led to her death.

According to him, the offences contravene sections 516, 230, 324, and 319 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun state, 2006.

In her ruling, O.O. Sam-Obaleye, the magistrate, granted the application and ordered that the defendant be remanded at the Ibara Correctional Centre pending legal advice from the state DPP.

Sam-Obaleye adjourned the case until May 26 for mention.
