Suspected terrorists have destroyed a major bridge linking communities in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State using an improvised explosive device (IED), in what authorities say is an attempt to disrupt ongoing security operations.

The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Monday, was confirmed by the spokesperson of the Niger State Police Command, SP Wasiu Abiodun.

In a statement, Abiodun said the attack took place around 2:00 a.m. along Luma Road, connecting Luma, Babanna, and Agwara communities.

“On 23rd March 2026, at about 6:30 a.m., a report was received indicating that at about 2:00 a.m. of the same date, suspected terrorists within the park forest used explosive devices to bomb a bridge located along Luma Road in Borgu LGA, connecting Luma–Babanna–Agwara communities,” he said.

He explained that the destruction of the bridge appeared to be a deliberate effort to undermine ongoing security operations in the area.

“The bridge was damaged by the hoodlums during security operations in the area,” he added.

Abiodun noted that security agencies have since intensified clearance operations in the affected area, while continuous monitoring is ongoing to ensure the safety of residents and restore normalcy. He, however, did not confirm if there were any casualties from the bridge explosion.

Footage and photographs obtained from the scene showed the wreckage of the destroyed bridge, with movement between the affected communities severely disrupted, leaving residents and commuters stranded.

Residents also reported that the attack affected commercial activities, particularly at the Babanna border market, which holds every Monday, as traders were unable to access the area.

Sources further disclosed that another tragic incident occurred along the Nuku-Woro Road, where a commercial vehicle carrying eight passengers reportedly ran over a suspected IED, killing all occupants.

While residents attributed the explosion to suspected bandits operating in the area, the police spokesperson did not comment on the reported deaths.

Niger State has witnessed a surge in violent attacks in recent months. In January, at least 30 people were killed when terrorists attacked a market in the Kebe district of Borgu LGA, setting shops ablaze, looting goods, and abducting several residents.
