Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, formerly known as Prince Andrew, has been arrested in England on suspicion of misconduct in public office following allegations that he shared sensitive trade-related documents with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The arrest took place on Thursday at the Sandringham Estate, where officers in plain clothes arrived in several unmarked police vehicles. Authorities confirmed that a man in his sixties from Norfolk was taken into custody and remains under investigation.

In a statement, Thames Valley Police said searches were being conducted at properties in Berkshire and Norfolk as part of an inquiry into alleged misconduct in public office. Officials declined to name the suspect, citing national guidance and the need to protect the integrity of an active investigation.

Assistant Chief Constable Oliver Wright said police opened the probe after a detailed assessment of the allegations and stressed that investigators would work with relevant partners while providing updates when appropriate. If convicted, the offence of misconduct in public office carries a potential maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

The development follows the release of emails by the U.S. Department of Justice that allegedly show Andrew forwarding briefings and reports from official overseas visits, including to Hong Kong, Vietnam and Singapore, to Epstein during the period he served as a UK trade envoy. One message from 2010 appeared to share a confidential briefing on investment opportunities tied to the reconstruction of Afghanistan’s Helmand province.

The arrest, which coincided with Andrew’s 66th birthday, marks an unprecedented moment in modern British royal history, as he becomes the first senior royal to be detained by police in connection with a criminal investigation of this nature.
