The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has pledged to take “appropriate action” against any individuals found guilty following chaotic scenes that marred the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 final between Senegal and hosts Morocco.

CAF, in a statement released on Monday, did not assign blame to either side but condemned the “unacceptable behaviour from some players and officials” during the match.

The drama unfolded late in regulation time when referee Jean-Jacques Ndala awarded Morocco a penalty with the score tied 0-0. In protest, most Senegalese players walked off the pitch, while at the opposite end of the stadium, a group of Senegalese fans clashed with Moroccan security personnel.

After a brief standoff, Senegal players returned to the field following the intervention of former Liverpool star Sadio Mané, one of the few who remained on the pitch to remonstrate with his teammates.

Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy saved Morocco’s penalty taken by Brahim Diaz, keeping the match goalless at the end of normal time. Senegal eventually secured a 1-0 victory in extra time, courtesy of a brilliant strike from Pape Gueye.

CAF emphasized in its statement: “CAF strongly condemns any inappropriate behaviour which occurs during matches, especially those targeting the refereeing team or match organizers. CAF is reviewing all footage and will refer the matter to competent bodies for appropriate action to be taken against those found guilty.”

The incident has sparked widespread discussion across the continent, raising questions about crowd control and player conduct in high-stakes matches.
