The Sokoto State High Court has ordered the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to immediately release the results of 47 students of Global Kids Academy, Sokoto, which had been withheld.

The ruling was delivered by Justice Muawiya Dahiru Mahmud and signed by the court’s Director of Litigation, Umma Abubukar Said, following submissions by F.E. Okotete Esq., counsel for the plaintiffs, and Kabiru Yusuf Esq., representing WAEC. The WAEC legal team was led by Professor Taiwo Osipitan (SAN).

In her judgment, Justice Mahmud held that the publications made by WAEC to the Commissioner for Education, the Chairman of the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPSD), and the Sokoto State WAEC branch, in a letter dated October 20, 2023, were defamatory.

The court noted, “Upon appraisal of the legal arguments and evidence presented, and considering the standing of the plaintiff in the educational community, the nature of the libel, and the mode and extent of the publication, judgment is entered in favour of the plaintiff against the defendant.”

WAEC was ordered to pay the school N5 million each in general and aggravated damages, totaling N10 million.
