Twenty-four hours after his arrest by the Nigeria Police Force, pro-democracy campaigner and human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, has reportedly been moved from the Force Intelligence Department (FID) in Abuja to an undisclosed location under controversial circumstances.

Sowore, who was the African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, had earlier shared a letter of police invitation on his social media handle on Tuesday night. He stated he was summoned to appear at the Force Headquarters by 11 a.m. on Wednesday. Though no copy of the alleged petition against him was initially provided, he honoured the invitation. However, he has since been detained.

By Thursday morning, reports surfaced again via his social media account that Sowore was allegedly moved from FID around 6 a.m. to an unknown location. According to the post, he sustained a broken hand during the transfer, reportedly after resisting an attempt by officers to move him from the cell without his clothes.

While in custody, Sowore revealed he was presented with two petitions. The first allegedly accused him of forgery, while the second reportedly charged him with “criminal defamation.”

Reacting to his continued detention, Amnesty International condemned the arrest, calling it unlawful and politically motivated. The international human rights organisation demanded Sowore’s unconditional release and urged Nigerian authorities to refrain from using bogus or trumped-up charges to silence critics.

“The Nigerian authorities must drop all politically motivated charges and listen to voices of dissent, not suppress them,” Amnesty stated.

Sowore, a fierce critic of the government, is known for his vocal campaigns against police brutality, corruption, and human rights violations across Nigeria. His arrest has reignited concerns over the shrinking civic space and the treatment of activists under the current administration.
