As Nigeria marks Democracy Day, Abiye Tam-George, MBA, CGAN, a former Vice-Chair of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Lagos Branch and former Chairperson of its Human Rights Committee, has called on the legal community and citizens to recommit themselves to the core values of democracy, justice, and human rights.

In a message commemorating the occasion, Tam-George emphasized that Democracy Day is not just a symbolic celebration, but a reminder of the shared responsibility to uphold the rule of law, protect fundamental freedoms, and ensure that the democratic system works for all.
“This day reminds us of our collective responsibility to safeguard democratic values and ensure respect for human rights in our society,” she said.
Tam-George highlighted the crucial role of lawyers and the legal profession in promoting accountability, transparency, and fairness within government and public institutions.
“As guardians of justice, the legal community plays a pivotal role in fostering a culture of accountability, transparency, and fairness,” she stated.
She urged members of the Bar and other stakeholders to deepen their engagement with government institutions and continue advocating for policies that strengthen democracy and protect the rights of all Nigerians, especially the vulnerable and marginalized.
“Let us renew our commitment to constructive engagement with the government, advocating for policies and practices that strengthen democratic institutions and protect the fundamental rights of all citizens,” she said.
Tam-George further called for collective action toward building a just and inclusive society, where dignity and equality are not only guaranteed by the constitution but reflected in daily governance and civic life.
“Let us unite in this noble pursuit, leveraging our expertise and passion to advance a democracy that reflects the aspirations of all,” she concluded.
