The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Anambra State Chapter, has strongly condemned the brutal assassination of Barrister Ifeanyi Rolex Iloakasia, a member of the NBA Otuocha Branch, who was shot dead by unknown gunmen on May 15, 2025, while returning from a court sitting at the High Court in Ekwulobia, Aguata Local Government Area.

In a press release signed by K.G. Abonyi, Esq., MCArb, Chairman of the Committee of Chairmen and Secretaries of the NBA in Anambra State, the association described the murder as “a heinous act” and “a blatant assault on the legal profession and the rule of law.”

“The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Anambra State Chapter condemns in the strongest possible terms the gruesome assassination of a bright and promising legal practitioner,” the statement read. “This heinous act is not only an attack on one of our own but also a blatant assault on the legal profession and the rule of law.”

The NBA expressed deep grief and outrage, noting that the murder of Barr. Iloakasia follows closely after the tragic death of Awa P. Awa, former Vice Chairman of the NBA Ihiala Branch, underscoring what the association views as a deteriorating security situation in the state.

The association commended the prompt visit of the Anambra State Commissioner of Police to the crime scene and the immediate commencement of investigations. However, it called for intensified efforts by the police, the Department of State Services (DSS), and other security agencies to ensure the killers are brought to justice swiftly.

“The legal profession cannot thrive under an atmosphere of fear and insecurity. Too many lawyers have been sacrificed to insecurity in this state,” the statement said.

Calling on Governor Charles Soludo to take decisive action, the NBA urged the strengthening of security architecture across Anambra State. While acknowledging the government’s efforts, especially since the launch of Operation Udo Ka Chi, the lawyers said more robust interventions are needed to protect citizens and legal professionals.

As a mark of protest, the NBA Anambra Chapter has declared a two-day boycott of all court sittings across the state from May 20 to May 21, 2025.

“This symbolic action is a collective call for justice, and a demand that the relevant authorities leave no stone unturned in pursuing the truth and ensuring accountability,” the statement concluded.
