*Withholds 39,834 Over Exam Irregularities

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has officially released the results of 1,951,811 candidates who sat for the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), while withholding 39,834 results due to various issues, including suspected infractions.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Friday, JAMB Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, said a total of 2,030,862 candidates registered for the 2025 UTME. Of these, 1,957,000 were successfully verified and participated in the exams, while 71,705 candidates were absent and 2,157 candidates were flagged due to biometric issues.

Oloyede revealed that 80 suspects are currently under investigation for examination fraud, with Anambra State topping the list with 14 suspects, followed by Lagos (9), Delta (8), Kano (7), Kaduna and Rivers (6 each), Ebonyi and Enugu (5 each), Imo and Ondo (3 each), and Nasarawa, Abia, and Plateau (2 each). Eight other states recorded one suspect each.

He noted that some of the infractions included impersonation, multiple registrations using double NINs, and attempts to manipulate biometric verification systems.

“A total of 96 results were withheld outright due to clear cases of malpractice, a reduction from the 123 recorded last year,” he said, adding that the board remains committed to eliminating exam fraud through continued innovation and enforcement.

The statistical breakdown of the results shows that only 420,415 candidates scored 200 and above, while a mere 12,414 candidates (0.63%) attained scores of 300 and above.

Further analysis revealed:

  • 4,756 candidates scored 320 and above
  • 7,658 scored between 300–319
  • 73,441 scored between 250–299
  • 334,560 scored between 200–249
  • 983,187 (50.29%) scored between 160–199
  • 488,197 (24.97%) scored between 140–159
  • 57,419 (2.94%) scored between 120–139
  • 3,820 (0.20%) scored between 100–119
  • 2,031 (0.10%) scored below 100

Professor Oloyede acknowledged that this year’s performance mirrored previous trends and attributed the low number of high scorers to stricter integrity measures in the examination process.

A significant number of candidates, 2,157, were prevented from writing the exam due to biometric authentication failures, which JAMB is currently investigating. Those not found culpable will be rescheduled to sit for the examination.

JAMB also flagged 41,027 underaged candidates — below the officially approved age — who nonetheless sat for the examination. Of these, 467 met the minimum prescribed score, and 50 were involved in malpractice.

“The underaged candidates’ results are being isolated for further review to identify those with exceptional abilities,” Oloyede said.

The JAMB boss announced that 82 inmates from correctional centres nearing the end of their sentences successfully took part in the 2025 UTME, in a bid to support their reintegration through education.

Of the 39,834 withheld results, 1,426 are under review, while others are being investigated for issues ranging from biometric mismatches to possible infractions. JAMB has assured the public that results will be released or cancelled based on the outcomes of these investigations.

Professor Oloyede concluded by reaffirming the Board’s commitment to a fair and transparent examination process, stating that all infractions would be addressed decisively to safeguard the integrity of the UTME system.
