The Delta State Ministry of Health has reportedly asked Osato Edobor, a student at the Delta State College of Nursing Sciences, to record a video expressing gratitude to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori after he intervened in her case. Edobor had previously received a query letter from the institution following a video she posted regarding the visit of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, to Delta State.

The query was issued after Edobor shared a clip highlighting how students reacted to the First Lady’s visit, as well as remarks that were perceived as disrespectful to the governor. In the video, she mentioned that she did not know his name, which was interpreted as an insult. Amid widespread reactions, the state government intervened, leading to the withdrawal of the disciplinary letter.

A source familiar with the situation disclosed that the health ministry instructed Edobor to create a short video thanking Governor Oborevwori for reversing the disciplinary action. Initially, she was asked to travel to Asaba for the recording, but when she declined, the commissioner reportedly requested that she simply record a brief clip from her location.

The controversy began when the nursing college issued Edobor a query for her video post. The incident took place on March 25, 2025, during the First Lady’s visit to Asaba’s Dome Event Center for the Renewed Hope Initiative Health Programme. The event involved distributing 10,000 professional kits, including Crocs and scrubs, to midwives in Nigeria’s South-South region.

In the query letter signed by the college’s provost, Mrs. Evbodaghe Rita Ogonne, Edobor’s actions were described as inappropriate and in violation of the institution’s rules, particularly the disciplinary code outlined in the student handbook. The letter accused her of engaging in a “malicious act” by recording and posting an unofficial response to a song played during the First Lady’s arrival.

Edobor was required to provide a written explanation in triplicate within 24 hours, failing which disciplinary action could be taken against her. However, sources indicate that she is deeply concerned about potential repercussions, especially as she has already repeated her class twice and is set to graduate on May 10, 2025.

A viral video linked to the controversy showed a group of nursing students rejecting the First Lady’s designation as “everyone’s mother” during the event. When the event’s host referred to her as “Na our mama be this” (meaning “This is our mother”), the students responded, “Na your mama be this” (“This is your mother”), signaling their disagreement.

This incident is seen by some as reflecting public frustration over economic challenges in the country. In response, the college’s provost stated that the institution took action because Edobor was wearing the school uniform in her video and because her statements allegedly disrespected the governor. The provost further claimed that Edobor made remarks implying security concerns, which she found disturbing and damaging to the school’s reputation.

Despite this, rights activists have condemned the college’s actions. Human rights advocate Omoyele Sowore has vowed to provide both legal and physical support to Edobor, insisting that she should be celebrated rather than punished for her video. He emphasized that any injustice against her would be resisted as a broader issue of fundamental rights.
