The Lagos State Judicial Service Commission has requested the Nigerian Bar Association’s (NBA) branches in Lagos to offer recommendations on suitability of shortlisted candidates being considered for High Court judge appointments.

In a confidential letter dated December 14th, the Commission’s Permanent Secretary, Olubukola O. Salami, notified the NBA branches in Lagos that 14 candidates for the position of lawyer have been shortlisted from an initial roster of nominees.

The NBA branch was directed to submit written comments and assessments of the suitability of the prospective judges to the Commission no later than December 20th.

Salami emphasized the urgent deadline was to enable meeting the timeline set by the National Judicial Council (NJC) for the appointment process.

The letter did not disclose the identities of the 14 candidates on the Lagos judicial shortlist. The NJC vets and confirms nominations for superior court vacancies across states under guidelines seeking to appoint judges of integrity and competence.

The request for NBA branch input highlights transparency efforts to gather wider peer review on candidates in order to reinforce the integrity of the appointment system.
