A former chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Chidi Odinkalu, has strongly criticized the Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, over her threat to sue the United Nations (UN).

Odinkalu slammed the minister’s comments at a press conference where she claimed the UN has been collecting funds from donors on behalf of Nigerians without accountability. Kennedy-Ohanenye gave the UN till November 15 to provide financial reports or face legal action.

In reaction, Odinkalu took to Twitter questioning how the minister was appointed by the Tinubu administration. He asked for her to be returned to her source as she continues to embarrass Nigeria on the international stage.

The activist described her threat to sue the UN as an embarrassment and suggested she lacks the capacity for the office she occupies. He insinuated that Kennedy-Ohanenye was unqualified for the ministerial role.

Odinkalu’s comments have amplified criticisms against the minister’s position which many deemed unreasonable. Her demands for the UN to account for voluntary donor funds donated in Nigeria’s name puzzled many.

Critics argue the minister showed a lack of basic knowledge of the UN’s role and operations. Her threat of a lawsuit made Nigeria a laughing stock globally with many expressing disbelief.

As one of the earliest ministerial appointees of President Tinubu, Kennedy-Ohanenye continues to face scrutiny over her competence. Odinkalu has now joined calls for her removal as an embarrassment to the government and nation.
