*Over 200 Police Officers in Lagos Barracks Face Uncertain Fate Following NPA Eviction Notice

There is growing anxiety among police officers residing in the Nigerian Port Authority (NPA) barracks in the Sunrise, Apapa area of Lagos State. This comes after the NPA authorities recently ordered them to vacate the premises within two weeks.

Some police officers who spoke anonymously to our reporters expressed concerns over the short notice to exit the barracks. They revealed the barracks had been sold off and occupants were initially paid N200,000 each as compensation to leave within three months. However, the deadline has now been abruptly cut to two weeks, causing distress.

“The fate of over 200 occupants of the barracks is currently uncertain. We urge the police authorities to intervene on our behalf,” one officer lamented. “With the paltry N200,000 compensation, it is impossible to secure decent accommodation in Lagos within this short timeframe.”

According to the officers, the barracks was purpose-built by the NPA to house police officers deployed to the ports. However, the NPA now intends to sell the property to private entities for conversion into a terminal.

At an earlier meeting, the NPA management promised N500,000 for each occupant to relocate but later reneged, offering only N200,000 instead.

The affected officers described the situation as an ambush, saying the NPA’s deputy commissioner of police started demanding their account details suddenly before transferring the money without prior notice.

“We were only verbally threatened to exit the barracks by this weekend. For those of us residing in distant places like Ikorodu, it will be difficult coming to Apapa daily,” one officer lamented.

Efforts to reach the NPA management for comments on the matter proved abortive. The NPA’s General Manager, Corporate Affairs, Josephine Moltok, did not respond to calls and text messages.

When contacted, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the NPA, Rhoda Olofu, declined immediate comments, asking our reporters to call back during official hours.

The spokesperson for the Maritime Police Command, DSP Ehinmode Rowland, confirmed being aware of the development but said the matter falls outside his jurisdiction.
