Muyiwa Adejobi, the Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), has addressed public concerns regarding the ability of police officers to afford high-end smartphones, emphasizing that it is “ridiculous” to doubt their financial capabilities.

The Background: How It Started

The controversy began when Adejobi posted a photograph on Friday showcasing Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) David Victoria, who also serves as the secretary to the Inspector General of Police (IGP). In the image, DSP Victoria is seen holding a Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 smartphone and wearing a diamond-branded wristwatch.

Adejobi’s caption read: “We have beautiful and intelligent ones in the force. This is DSP David Victoria, secretary to the IGP. Happy weekend. Ire o.”

In response to the post, numerous netizens questioned how a police officer could afford such luxury items. Some users even requested information about DSP Victoria’s salary and financial statements to determine how she could purchase a cellphone reportedly worth over one million naira.

One X user commented, “Her cellphone, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold, is worth over a million naira. I don’t wanna talk about her wristwatch, which is also not cheap. Where did she get the money from, and how much is her monthly salary that she was able to afford all that?”

Adejobi’s Defense

Muyiwa Adejobi, known for his active presence on social media, responded to the public queries on his X handle. He firmly defended police officers’ financial status, asserting that they are not “paupers” and called on the X user to withdraw their statement.

“Police officers are not paupers. Withdraw your statement. It’s ridiculous to us to say a DSP can’t use Samsung Fold 2… you need to reason straight and be objective. Do you know what it is to be a DSP?” Adejobi argued.

Price Verification

To shed light on the matter, Our correspondent conducted a price check for the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2, revealing that the 256GB model ranges from ₦700,000 to ₦750,000 depending on the location. Meanwhile, the 512GB version of the same phone is priced between ₦800,000 and ₦850,000.

Public Discourse and Expectations

This exchange on social media has sparked a wider conversation about the financial well-being of police officers in Nigeria and the expectations regarding their lifestyle. It underscores the need for transparency and accountability in public service.

As the debate continues, it remains to be seen whether this incident will lead to increased scrutiny of police officers’ financial affairs and, in turn, more comprehensive efforts to address issues of remuneration and transparency within the Nigeria Police Force.
