The esteemed figure in the world of accounting, Mr. Akintola Williams, peacefully passed away at 9 a.m. today.

Mr. Williams, who celebrated his remarkable 104th birthday on the 9th of August 2023, leaves behind a legacy that has profoundly influenced the field of accounting in Nigeria and beyond.

As the pioneer chartered accountant in Nigeria, he established the country’s first indigenous chartered accounting firm, known as “Akintola Williams & Co.,” setting the stage for the growth and development of the accounting profession in Nigeria.

He was a founding member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and was president from 1963 to 1965. He was also a member of the National Board of Accountants and Auditors.

Throughout his illustrious career, Mr. Akintola Williams played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), contributing significantly to the nation’s financial landscape. He also made history as the inaugural President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Nigeria (ICAN), where he continued to champion excellence and professionalism in accounting.

The passing of Mr. Akintola Williams marks the end of an era, but his enduring impact on the world of accounting and his dedication to the growth of the profession will continue to inspire generations to come. His contributions to Nigeria’s financial and business sectors will forever be remembered and celebrated.

Williams received many awards and honours, including the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) and the Nigerian National Order of Merit (NNOM). He was also a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.
