The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef O. Fagbemi, has outlined his vision for people-centered justice in Nigeria. He shared this vision in a goodwill message delivered at the opening ceremony of the 63rd Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Abuja.

In his insightful address, Fagbemi began by expressing his gratitude for the privilege of serving as the 24th Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice. He underscored his commitment to the rule of law and the responsibilities of his office, vowing to uphold the principles of justice in line with the oath he took.

Acknowledging the challenges posed by global economic downturns, the COVID-19 pandemic, and geopolitical conflicts, Fagbemi emphasized Nigeria’s resilience in facing these obstacles. He urged legal practitioners to prioritize the nation’s interests and play active roles in shaping its future.

Fagbemi lauded the leadership of the NBA and the Annual General Conference Planning Committee for their meticulous organization and choice of the conference theme, “Getting it Right – Charting the Course for Nigeria’s Nation Building.” He commended the progress of the NBA as a professional association and urged collective efforts in achieving nationhood ideals. He urged constructive engagement with the NBA to drive improvements in justice administration and respect for the judiciary’s independence.

Fagbemi described the enormous tasks and expectations in his new role. He introduced President Tinubu as a democratic icon and champion of federalism, inviting him to deliver remarks and open the conference. While acknowledging the challenges of economic uncertainties, Fagbemi called for steadfastness in promoting human rights, the rule of law, and good governance.

Highlighting his role as the Attorney-General of the Federation, Fagbemi revealed his commitment to prioritize people-centered justice, fair legal reforms, and collaboration among justice sector institutions. He outlined critical areas of focus, including strengthening relationships among government arms, enhancing judicial processes, promoting compliance with laws, and leveraging technology for justice administration.

Fagbemi expressed his intention to work closely with the NBA and fellow colleagues in the justice sector to achieve these goals, underscoring that his success would be collective. He vowed to drive positive changes in legal intervention, policy formulation, and governance.

The address concluded with Fagbemi introducing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, as the keynote speaker for the conference’s opening ceremony. The event continued with anticipation for the impactful discussions and collaborations that would shape the course of Nigeria’s legal landscape.

As legal practitioners and stakeholders absorb Fagbemi’s inspiring address, the 63rd NBA Annual General Conference embarks on its mission to foster progress, dialogue, and transformation within the legal community and the nation as a whole.
