Tony Elumelu, the Chairman of Heirs Holdings, has shared insights into his journey as one of Nigeria’s leading entrepreneurs. Contrary to the belief of privileged upbringing or attending elite schools, Elumelu attributes his success to hard work, discipline, and sacrifices.

Speaking in a Facebook post on a Sunday, Elumelu emphasized that his achievements weren’t based on innate intelligence, highlighting that present circumstances should not dictate one’s future.

Reflecting on his speech at a Redeemed Christian Church of God event, Elumelu recounted the life principles that have shaped his success both in business and personal life.

He stated, “I didn’t become the Chairman of UBA Group and Transcorp Group because I had wealthy parents or attended the best schools, or because I was the most intelligent in my state or country. Your circumstances today must not define your future.”

Elumelu stressed the significance of embracing hard work, discipline, and sacrifice. He advocated going the extra mile and making choices aligned with long-term goals. He affirmed that with determination and discipline, desired outcomes could be achieved.

Furthermore, Elumelu underscored the importance of authenticity, advising against compromising values to conform to societal norms. He urged individuals to remain true to themselves and not to alter their identities for social acceptance.

“Be yourself – There are so many distractions and influences in the world we live in. Over time, people start to doubt their identity and act in a manner that is alien to them. Don’t go against your values because you want to be perceived as ‘sociable’. Anyone who doesn’t accept you the way you are should leave,” he remarked.

Elumelu also cautioned against the deceptive allure of social media, advising caution when interpreting online content. He urged young individuals not to be swayed by what they see on social platforms and stressed the need for discipline in navigating life’s challenges.

“Be careful about social media – It’s not everything you see on social media that is real. Do not be drawn in by its influence – it can be misleading at times. That is why discipline is extremely important in your life journey,” he concluded.
