Atedo Peterside, the visionary behind Stanbic IBTC Bank Plc and the Anap Foundation, has expressed that the recent appearance of the “All Eyes On The Judiciary” slogan on billboards across Nigeria should not be construed as offensive.

Peterside’s perspective comes in response to the ongoing debate sparked by the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON)’s directive to remove the billboards, which were sponsored by a group identified as the Diaspora’s for Good Governance.

The billboards featuring this slogan were strategically positioned as the presidential election tribunal stands on the brink of delivering its crucial verdict on the petitions challenging President Bola Tinubu’s victory in the general election.

In response, ARCON not only mandated the removal of these billboards but also undertook substantial organizational changes. This included the dissolution of its Advertising Standards Panel and the suspension of the director and deputy director of regulations, who were held accountable for approving the billboards centered around the presidential election petition tribunal.

However, Atedo Peterside took to Twitter on Friday to express his view on the matter. He underscored that the slogan itself, “All Eyes On The Judiciary,” should not be perceived as offensive to anyone possessing a rational and sincere perspective within a civilized society.

Peterside’s tweet conveyed his stance clearly: “For the record, methinks #AllEyesOnTheJudiciary is a neutral slogan that should ordinarily not offend a right-thinking and sincere person in a civilised society. I can understand someone rejecting a negative slogan like ‘let us turn our noses up at the judiciary’. Enough said.”

The ongoing dialogue surrounding this advertising controversy highlights the broader discourse concerning free speech, the judiciary’s role, and the role of media in shaping public opinion in Nigeria’s sociopolitical landscape.
