Chief Chuks Muoma, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and former Legal Adviser of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, now Chairman of the Igbo Lawyers Association (ILA), shares his insights on leadership failure in Nigeria, political motivations, and Igbo development in an exclusive interview with eNwtelegraph.

Chief Chuks Muoma starts by expressing his concern over what he perceives as a backward trend in Nigeria’s progress. In his view, the country is not making positive strides but is instead regressing. He believes that the quality of leadership has declined over the years, and he highlights the prevalence of corruption in politics as a major factor hindering genuine progress.

Muoma draws from his personal experience, explaining how he withdrew from active politics due to his aversion to corruption. He points out that many politicians enter the field not out of a desire to serve the nation but to amass wealth. He criticizes the political class for comprising individuals who have failed in their respective professions and turn to politics as an easy route to financial gain.

Muoma questions the appropriateness of Bola Tinubu’s presidential aspirations due to his age and the concerns about his ability to handle the demands of the presidency. He suggests that the focus on power and wealth accumulation has led politicians like Tinubu to overlook the need for succession planning and advisory roles.

He also emphasizes that leadership shouldn’t be about personal wealth accumulation but about serving the people’s interests, implying that the quest for power at an advanced age might not align with this principle.

Muoma raises questions about the backgrounds of South-East Governors, implying that some may have entered politics to avoid a return to poverty. He believes that this fear of returning to poverty drives some politicians’ excessive ambition for wealth accumulation, which he sees as a significant obstacle to effective governance and development.

He criticizes Igbo politicians for not prioritizing the development of their homeland and emphasizes that the pursuit of wealth often takes precedence over the well-being of the people they serve.

Muoma acknowledges that some Igbo people prioritize material wealth over investing in their homeland’s development. He believes that the focus on financial gain and a materialistic mindset is a significant factor preventing the growth and progress of the South-East region.

He also points out the issue of Igbophobia in Nigeria, where the Igbo people are often stigmatized and criticized for their industrious nature and enterprise. He asserts that Igbophobia has hampered Nigeria’s progress and suggests that until the negative perception changes, genuine progress will be hard to achieve.

Chief Muoma laments the lack of true judicial independence and the erosion of the rule of law in Nigeria. He believes that politicians’ control over the judiciary, legislature, and executive branches is a significant impediment to justice and proper governance. He argues that the only solution is a shift towards true federalism and a genuinely independent judiciary.

In this thought-provoking interview, Chief Chuks Muoma offers a critical perspective on Nigeria’s leadership, the challenges of political ambition, and the need for a more patriotic and selfless approach to governance. He highlights the consequences of materialistic politics and the imperative of true federalism to reshape Nigeria’s governance structure.
