Controversy erupted on Friday after Aliyu Adamu Kibiya, Kano State’s Commissioner for Lands, was captured on video threatening judges involved in the ongoing governorship election tribunal case.

In his fiery address during a protest rally, Kibiya warned the judges to “choose between their lives” and pass a favorable verdict for his party, the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).

He accused the judges of potential bribe-taking and stated that any unfair judgment would trigger violence exceeding the Boko Haram insurgency and banditry in other northern states.

Kibiya’s provocative remarks, posted online by NNPP and opposition APC members, quickly went viral and elicited widespread condemnation. When later contacted, he remained defiant, reiterating that his stance was due to alleged injustice.

His dangerous rhetoric, seen as an attempt to intimidate the judiciary and assault judicial independence, has been criticized for risking instigation of chaos. The police commissioner summoned NNPP and APC leaders, banning protests to avoid clashes amidst tensions surrounding the impending tribunal verdict.

The NNPP’s governorship candidate, Abba Yusuf, won the recent election, which has been challenged by the APC. Authorities have urged restraint from all parties as the legal case proceeds. However, fierce criticism remains directed at Kibiya over his blatant threats which endanger the judges and potentially stoke unrest before the tribunal’s ruling.
